Casino Licences Explained
A gambling licence is permission from a government regulator that lets a casino offer real-money games legally. It is the most important safety signal on a casino site, but not every licence means the same thing, and a licence on its own never guarantees you will be treated fairly. Here is what the main licences mean and how to check one yourself.
What a licence does
A regulator sets rules the operator must follow: keeping player money separate from company funds, offering fair and tested games, verifying age and identity, providing responsible-gambling tools and running a complaints process. If the operator breaks the rules, the regulator can fine it or take the licence away. Strong regulators audit operators and help players in disputes; weaker ones do little beyond issuing the paperwork.
The main licensing authorities
- UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) - among the strictest, with strong player protection and mandatory dispute resolution.
- Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) - a leading and widely trusted EU regulator.
- Gibraltar, Isle of Man and Alderney - respected European jurisdictions with careful vetting.
- Curacao - very common for international and crypto casinos; easier to obtain, with lighter player protection, so quality varies.
- Anjouan, Kahnawake and Costa Rica - lightweight offshore licences that allow legal operation but offer limited help if something goes wrong.
How to check a licence yourself
- Find the licence name and number, usually in the casino footer.
- Open the regulator official website directly by typing the address yourself.
- Search its public register for the number and confirm the company name matches.
- Make sure the licence is current and not expired or suspended.
What a licence does not guarantee
A licence does not promise fast withdrawals, fair bonus terms or that the casino is legal for you. Rules and availability differ by country and change often. Read the terms, check the casino accepts players from your country, and confirm that online gambling is legal where you live.
